Our tour begins at the west end of the Calibishie Coast in the mountain heights above the village of Penville. The people here are mostly farmers with their vegetable gardens perched precariously on the steep hillsides more than 300 meters above the sea.
A dirt road leads you off on a six-hour hike (there and back) to Cappuchine. As you crest a small hill you will come across a large circular meadow or savanne which is the mouth of an extinct volcano.
A little further up you will come across the Cold Soufriere, a large sulphur spring and pool resulting from the same volcano. This is all an easy walk but you may need to ask directions or tip one of the local youth to guide you.
Just below Penville, a 20-minute, moderate hike from the main road up a steep mountain slope brings you to a very unusual waterfall pouring out of a black stone crevice.
