Banking
Each village has a Credit Union where you can do necessary
banking including exchange of currency. For more complicated
procedures there are 3 banks in Portsmouth. An ATM is located
at the A & A grocery on the main road in Calibishie. Most
North American and European debit cards can be used in this
machine.
Before making a purchase with a Credit or Debit card ask as
some merchants do not take credit cards. U.S. dollars are
accepted at all businesses. The rate of exchange for U.S.
dollars is about 2.67 and is fixed. EC dollars of course are
accepted every where. Euros or Canadian dollars can be exchanged
at any bank. Traveler's cheques should be converted at a bank
as well.

Pick up can be arranged at airport or at your accommodation. All the rental firms
have a desk at the airport. There are taxis meeting most flights if you have not
arraigned for pick up by your host. The cost into Calibishie village is about $25
U.S. dollars from Melville Hall airport. If
you plan to use local buses to get around the island the cost is very low. Look for
an "H" on the license plate. They can be flagged by raising your hand as
they pass. Be sure to check if they are going as far as you plan. They are a fun
way to get around! The approximate cost from Calibishie Village to Portsmouth is
$4.75 EC.
Churches
Religion is an important part of the lives of most Dominicans. Although the Roman
Catholic Church is the largest in Dominica, we have many other denominations to chose
from, including Methodist, Baptist, Seventh Day Adventist, Church of God and Jehovah
Witness. Each village holds regular services and are pleased to have visitors join
in their worship. It is an experience not to be missed.
